My First in Hack Gaps: Authority Versus Order
So you want to get maximum out of your staff? Give them authority, more authority. When order comes in the form of a gentle request employees feel good, they feel that they are important to company, boss respect them and they take responsibility.
If you want to take your business from 0 to 1, give them more authority.
If you want to take your business from 1 to n, order your employees.
I am privileged to work with a top notch Indian company in a small capacity. But in a span of 18 years I never received any order to work, there are no orders to work for bunch A or Bunch B of task. When a task comes I have full authority to gain full control on it and perform.
For obvious reasons there are enough checks and balances. I do not feel over burdened even when there is massive task to perform, huge team to work in cooperation with each other. Like any other person I equally need to inform what has been done, what I am doing at my desk, what I am doing with team and I continuously have to strive to add values whatever I can.
Value is a very big word, I am too small to stand in front of that tall mountain like value. But every small counts.
In order to add something I often exchange massive emails with company's boss. Certainly, neither every email could be accepted, nor every idea is good. Whether I get appreciation or not is other side of the coin. Bosses are often miser in appreciation in this of geography. But fortunately, I never heard, you are talking rubbish.
Before extending any rubbish idea I know nobody will fire me or scold me. This give me freedom to think more, research more and say it when it is mind.
No employee think for company beyond a certain time hours. But when I am most free and something strike my mind, whether for this blog, or my another blog or may be my living or life or may be an idea that sounds good (whether its bad or good) I always give a chance to myself to think how can I implement the same idea with the projects I am assigned to work with.
If you are supposing I never receive orders, you are wrong. In fact when I receive an order it has multiple layers, I have to find those truly tine gaps between those layers and hack the gaps to add some value whatever I can.
I don't know if I am adding value or not, there are no measurement techniques but one thing is sure exercises of finding gaps keep me going. And we hack the gaps together.
That is effort of whole team to hack the gaps where I try to add smaller values. I don't know if I am really adding or living in illusion but I know for sure 18 years of togetherness is an indication of I do try to hack the gaps.
