Why build a website when I have social media

Often non serious people quote the said headline because they are unsure about their business and own skills. So you do not become the next victim of misinformation here is this article.

Well, you are popular on social media, perhaps you have hundreds of followers and still counting. You draws whole world attention. And you feel, why build a website when I can sale my products using social media. And its free too.
Social Media has gone viral because its free. Many have made good use of it and made pretty good income during rise of social media. Those were the times when social media worked for social media. But nothing is permanent so does not social media. If you remember Orkut or ask someone senior to you what was this and you will know the answer.
There was time when everyone found Orkuting. But now you can't see it.
I see social media as Weed Grass, why, because it grows on its own, you just need to show up and it will expand. And remember weed grass is not useful. My belonging to village tell me, you can use some useful weed grass to feed cattle but rest of the portion you need to destroy else it won't allow crops to grow.
When you are on a social media, you are using a third party system, you cannot customize it much. Its same like when you rent out a house you cannot make much modifications in kitchen, washroom or living space without permission of house owner, and you can live for a certain term only. That is difference why house cannot be called home.
Home is from where you belongs to. It gives you identity which is pretty permanent. Same is true with your business. When you set a shop online its important to set your website which will give you online identity. YourName.Com is your business identity which is pretty permanent. Without a website your business is like orphan on social media. Who like life an orphan, so does not your business.
The term business itself is a serious affair. If you mean business you must have to give it an identity. And online identity is yourname.com. An email hosted on your domain, a shop rack hosted on your website, a phone number printed on your contact us page is much stronger way of online business communication.
Today, building a beginner website is not a very costly affair. You can start with very meager budget  and slowly improve it with time. If you are an startup and want to build online identity chose your domain name. There are plenty of help and tools available to Web Dev DIY.
To begin with do not spend resources on a fancy website, indeed chose for the basic version and improve as business grows.
